ICF blocks consist of two panels of expanded polystyrene insulation (EPS) connected by a reinforced plastic web. This design ensures structural strength, superior thermal efficiency, and ease of installation.
As certified installers, we can work with any ICF brand you choose. However, we regularly use and recommend Amvic blocks, manufactured in Ireland. These blocks meet the rigorous standards required for safe and reliable construction, ensuring every project aligns with building regulations.
Most ICF blocks have a lambda value of 0.031 W/mK, offering exceptional thermal efficiency. Standard blocks, with 75mm insulation on each side, achieve a U-value of 0.20 W/m²K. However, the uninterrupted layers of insulation from foundation to roof enhance the overall thermal performance, with potential U-values as low as 0.15 W/m²K.
ICF blocks feature robust plastic webs, designed to withstand up to 500kg of force. These webs maintain the structural integrity of the blocks during concrete pouring while ensuring thermal efficiency. We advise avoiding steel webbing due to its high conductivity and reduced insulation performance.
To minimise waste and improve efficiency, we recommend designing wall lengths and openings in 200mm modules where possible.
High-quality ICF blocks incorporate cavity closers for windows and doors. These closers significantly reduce thermal bridging and enhance the building’s overall energy performance.
ICF blocks streamline construction by allowing for pre-planned service openings, reducing the need for time-consuming core drilling.
ICF construction is generally limited to 18 metres (5 storeys) in height. However, it remains a versatile solution for a variety of building types, from homes to care facilities and even swimming pools.
